Mission Membership: because we don’t all have the same 24 hours as Beyoncé

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to join the growing movement of people who want to be more productive with their time: more time for self-care; more time to exercise; more time to spend with loved ones.

There’s a productivity meme that did the rounds a while back that suggested "everyone has the same 24 hours as Beyoncé", which was supposed to inspire regular folks to achieve what Queen Bey achieves in the same 24-hour period.

It’s a lovely notion that’s meant to give the procrastinator in all of us a motivational kick in the derrière, but unless you’ve got a dedicated gaggle of assistants, nannies, chefs, or housekeepers at your disposal, you probably don’t experience the same 24 hours as Beyoncé, Jeff Bezos, Oprah Winfrey, or anyone else that you consider wildly successful.

What this axiom fails to consider is that Beyoncé isn’t on hold to Manx Telecom for 30 minutes because her internet router has packed up; that Jeff Bezos hasn’t raced to the gym to beat closing time only to discover he’s packed his wife’s trainers in an embarrassing mistake; and Oprah doesn’t cook dinner while her pint-sized dictator of a toddler tries to upend anything that isn’t bolted to the floor.

If I manage to listen to a podcast, get a workout in, get my social media sorted for the day, cook dinner that's at least semi-edible, schedule a phone call with my mum, read at least two chapters of a book before bed, write a blog for my website, and send an email to Hermes customer service to check whether they’ll deliver my parcel on time for once in their miserable existence, that’s a successful 24 hours for me.

But there are legitimate reasons why most of us simply cannot achieve as much in our day as some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs, and one of those reasons is life: we work long hours, have families to look after, don’t have the body confidence to step foot in the gym, or don’t have the money to pay devoted and doting acolytes to complete some of our more mundane tasks.

Mission Membership was created as a solution to these problems.
